Nicholas Copernicus Elementary School is located on the South side of Chicago and serves approximately 450 students. As a 2008-2009 CPS Turnaround School, Copernicus is committed to becoming a positive, nurturing, learning environment in which all students can learn. Our students will be supported by professionals who care and promote a sense of community within our school. Copernicus will offer a rigorous academic program of study designed to prepare students for success in the broader society. Our curriculum will focus on literacy, math, science, and technology.

Professional Development
In preparation for the 2008-2009 school year, teachers will participate in voluntary Professional Development, Strategic Planning and the School Staff Retreat from July 28, 2008 to August 26, 2008.
Academic Calendar
Copernicus is scheduled to have 38.6 weeks of school during the 2008-2009 school year. There have been discussions for Copernicus to enter into a year-round school schedule for the 2009-2010 school year. However, this has not been determined or finalized.

Copernicus is still looking for an outstanding Special Education teacher for the 2008-2009 school year. Candidates must have proper certification and endorsements to be considered.
- Experience with one or more of the following is stongly preferred:
- DIBELS
- Lucy Caulkin's Unit of Study (K-8)
- Everyday Math (K-5)
- Math Thematics (6-8)
- Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (K-8)
- Supported Core Reading Materials Adoption (SCRMA).
- At least three years of teaching experience and/or National Board Certification are also strongly preferred.
