Howe School of Excellence is located in Chicago’s Northwest Austin community. About 99 percent of the school’s student population is African American and 98.6 percent receive free or reduced price lunch. As a 2008-2009 Turnaround School, Howe is committed to serving our students by forming a community in which administrators, teachers, staff, parents and students work together toward a common goal. Howe will develop learners who think critically and are self-motivating, respectful and resilient.
School staff will constantly strive to create a learning environment that supports students in achieving academic and social success. Howe’s students will receive high-quality, standards-based instruction. Faculty will engage students through differentiated, effective and rigorous curricula within a caring, secure and positive environment. Howe teams will consistently analyze data to drive student achievement.
As an instructional leader, Principal Keisha Campbell will help develop a professional learning community that will be built upon relational trust, common goals, and shared accountability. Beginning with 5 weeks of professional development prior to the start of school, the Howe team will work together to ensure that structures and systems that allow for collaboration, reflective dialogue, and data analysis are in place from the start.
Howe provides outstanding educators with an opportunity to be more than just one teacher. Teachers at Howe will have the opportunity to be part of a dynamic team of educators who share a vision for what a school can be and a commitment to students who have long been overlooked.
Howe is at the forefront of an educational movement that will make history. Success will demonstrate that ethnicity, family income and neighborhood need not predetermine a child’s future success. The Howe community will not make excuses, will not give up, and will see students rise to their highest potential.
