Chicago Public Schools (CPS) is the third-largest public school system in the United States, serving more than 400,000 children in 623 schools. Schools are grouped into area clusters and are overseen by Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan under the Office of Mayor Richard M. Daley. Urban school reform is not only possible – it is happening. Chicago's resurgent public schools are being noted as a national model for urban school reform.
Advances
This is a unique and exciting time to join Chicago Public Schools and be part of a mission to ensure educational excellence for “Every Child, Every School.” CPS is making advances in urban education through new initiatives like the Turnaround Schools, which are designed to radically re-engineer teaching and learning for underperforming schools in high-poverty neighborhoods.
Gains are already evident: Chicago Public Schools recently marked the largest one-year jump in scores on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test since 1995. The district’s system-wide composite for reading, math, and science on the 2006 ISAT rose to a new high of 62.5 percent of all students meeting or exceeding state standards, 15.2 percentage points higher than the previous all-time high of 47.3 percent.
Challenges
While it is true that great strides have been made, some schools continue to under-perform. For the 2008-2009 school year, the Chicago Board of Education has authorized special status for six such schools, which are targeted for turnaround based on a model already being implemented in Chicago. “The need for change in these schools is urgent,” says CPS Chief Executive Officer Arne Duncan. “We can’t wait to provide better education options for our children. We have to find a way to do it now.”
Dedicated teachers are needed to join highly committed teams to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to succeed. Teachers in Turnaround Schools must be particularly committed to overcoming the challenges they face in helping their students achieve. Teach Chicago Turnarounds is seeking outstanding individuals who are determined to meet this challenge and demonstrate successful strategies in the classroom.
